There have been some changes in Google Maps that you should be aware of. The app received the update Immersive Navigation, which means that there have been some changes in terms of the look of the map and navigation options available during your journey.
As a result, Google wants you to find it much easier to determine your location on the map.
What's New in Google Maps
First of all, users can now see the completely new 3D map that is far more detailed and realistic than ever before. This way, it will be much easier for you to find your location, identify landmarks and navigate through the streets without any problems.
Google claims that this is one of the most important visual updates that it has introduced in years.
Immersive Navigation Feels Like Real Driving
A brand new function of Immersive Navigation introduces many small changes which significantly influence the whole experience. The new function presents you the following elements while driving:
lane markings
traffic lights
stop signs
and other elements of the road.
As a result, users can see the exact representation of the road in front of them, instead of seeing only the road line.
It was mentioned that all this information might distract the driver while driving. The main purpose of Google is to provide more context to the drivers to react quicker and more effectively.
Voice Directions Become Smarter
Also, Google Maps has made improvements to its voice directions service as the voice direction is now more conversational and natural as if your friend were sitting next to you and guiding you on the directions rather than a robotically generated voice.
For instance, where it used to say "turn right in 500 meters," it now says something like "pass the exit and then make another exit." Though it seems to be just a slight change, it does actually make it very easy for you to follow directions, especially when you need to exit from highways.
Better Route Comparisons
The process of route planning has become even better as whenever there are two or three ways to reach the destination place, the app gives you information about all those routes along with the details like time and traffic situation.
Available Where at This Point in Time
Google is introducing Immersive Navigation using a server-side update rather than a client update, which means that no new software needs to be downloaded by the user.
It is currently available for use on the following platforms:
- Android
- iOS
- Android Auto
- Apple CarPlay
However, it comes with a limitation since it's only available for users from the US. According to Google, the feature will gradually become available in other countries in the coming weeks.
