Well, there is good news for those who are using Windows 10 – now Microsoft will give you one additional year for this software! As the software company has extended its security support for PCs for one more year, all such eligible devices would continue receiving the necessary updates until October 12, 2027. Indeed, Windows 10 went online in 2015, and regular support for it ended on October 14, 2025. After that, one could choose one of the three ways out of the difficult situation: either upgrade to Windows 11, go with Microsoft cloud products, or join the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program and be protected for some more time. What Does It Mean? Originally, ESU was planned to stop working in October 2026. However, now it will work until October 2027, providing more time for people unwilling to shift to Windows 11. If you have already subscribed for ESU, there is nothing to do – the extra year of support is given automatically. If not, you can join anytime until October 2027.
Your computer must be using Windows 10 version 22H2 (Home, Pro, Pro Education, or Pro for Workstations). Also, your device should have the latest updates installed. Lastly, you must use your Microsoft account with admin permissions; a local or child account cannot be used. 3 Ways to Join ESU You can receive ESU in any of the following 3 ways: Turn on Windows Backup service – This is free, at zero cost to you. Use Microsoft Rewards points – Use 1,000 points to get ESU instead of paying money. Purchase a license – Cost you $30 plus taxes for 1 year that will work on up to 10 devices. What Happens Post-2027 After the extended deadline expires, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates to Windows 10 operating system. Though the device will continue working, but it becomes susceptible to viruses and other threats. Companies using the Windows 10 OS might experience compliance and software compatibility problems.
However, a few additional pieces of software that are related will receive continued support for a little longer. Both Microsoft Defender Antivirus and the Microsoft 365 security updates will be supported until October 2028 despite the lack of support for Windows 10. Microsoft continues to encourage everyone to switch to Windows 11 and get their own Copilot+ PC despite the additional time. To make the transition easier, it is recommended to use Windows Backup to backup all of your files, pictures, and settings.
