If you are that sort of individual who ends up having hundreds of video clips stored away on your device, the ones that you never seemed to find the time to edit – Google just came up with something that will change that for you.
On Wednesday, Google launched Video Remix in Google Photos, a feature specifically tailored for the casual video lovers among us.
So What Does Video Remix Actually Do?
This new Google feature uses the company's recently launched Gemini Omni model to edit and even alter your videos within minutes. No need to familiarize yourself with editing software as all you have to do is select a clip and apply a template – AI does everything else. Chrome Unboxed
Some of what it can do:
- Improve poor lighting conditions – add cinematic relighting to fix that dark clip Chrome Unboxed
- Change backgrounds – switch up a plain background to something different Chrome Unboxed
- Artistic touches – convert your normal video clips to watercolor, sketchbook or oil painting style clips Chrome Unboxed
Where It Can Be Found
The new AI feature is located in the Create tab within Google Photos next to the current image-based Remix, Photo to Video, and Collage features. Simply select a video in your gallery, pick a style, and allow Gemini Omni to do its job. Dataconomy
Whose Hands It Reaches Into
Currently, the Video Remix is not available to all users; it’s going to be rolled out to the subscribers of Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra tiers in the following countries: Dataconomy
United States, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Philippines, Turkey, Argentina, Colombia, and Egypt.
In case you’re not using any paid services by Google AI, chances are you’ll have to wait some time before trying out this new AI-powered feature.
Why It Matters
It's not the first time that Google has gotten into AI-based photo editing tools and it surely won't be the last time either. Google Photos has been steadily transforming itself into an AI-based editing application over the course of the last year, with recent features including blemish removal, skin toning, eye enhancement, tooth whitening, and an AI-based digital wardrobe that allows you to test out different clothes from pictures of your own. The larger context here is one of competition. With Google competing against companies like OpenAI, Apple, and Adobe to invest in AI-based creative applications, Google is trying to ensure that users stay within its ecosystem and don't end up using another editing application altogether.
Is Video Remix for You?
For someone like me who is not an expert but just looking for some better video to share in my group chat, this app is quite helpful. It’s definitely not meant to take place of professional software that can edit videos, and if you’re working on content creation professionally, chances are you’ll need to go back to using desktop software. But if you want to enhance a poor birthday video or put an exciting filter in your dog video before sharing, Video Remix is right up your alley.
