WhatsApp now has introduced a new feature that everyone has been demanding since long… the option to be able to chat with people without revealing your phone number. While you will have to use your phone number to create an account on WhatsApp, from there on you can choose a username so that others do not have to know your number to be able to contact you. What’s New As of today, users can begin reserving usernames before the new feature launches in full form later this year. Usernames must be between 3 and 35 characters long.
Existing users can also have a unique username as long as they follow the guidelines set by WhatsApp. Furthermore, companies and content creators are able to have usernames that match those on their Instagram or Facebook profile, giving them consistency across multiple platforms. Setting up Your Username Once it rolls out in your region, you will get notified. Afterwards, you just need to go to Settings > Account > Username, and claim yours. In addition, there is something called the “username key” that allows others to reach you via your username and not through your phone number. Your Privacy is Safeguarded Usernames will not be searchable in the application. Therefore, people can only contact you if they have your specific username, and not by searching for you. It is also editable and even removable, depending on what the user prefers. According to the head of the product at WhatsApp, Alice Newton-Rex, the new feature aims to help users protect their information.
