LinkedIn is launching a new reporting mechanism which allows users to report posts that appear as low-quality, AI-generated posts. This launch comes in the wake of "LinkedIn AI slop" that has become an internet slang term referring to posts generated using artificial intelligence.
The new mechanism, "Seems like AI slop," is being offered to users through a new button available in the three-dot drop-down menu of posts to those who have access to this option.
Why LinkedIn Is Cracking Down
According to LinkedIn's Chief Product Officer, Hari Srinivasan, minimizing AI slop has now emerged as one of the most important goals for the organization. LinkedIn says that such content refers to posts which have been generated by using AI technology and while appearing well-written on the surface, are completely void of perspective or substance.
LinkedIn has already moved ahead to restrict the reach of such posts outside the primary network of the individual concerned. However, through this new reporting feature, LinkedIn will be able to gather information from users to refine its detection algorithms.
What Happens When You Report a Post
If a user marks a posting as AI slop, then LinkedIn will not display this particular posting to the user ever again. LinkedIn is also working on another method, which will be able to provide anonymous feedback to the creators about how their postings may seem to be inauthentic to the rest of the LinkedIn community.
LinkedIn Isn't Banning AI-Assisted Writing
Let us take care to specify what this is really about. In LinkedIn's words, there is a distinction between the use of AI as an aid to writing and posting poor-quality AI-generated content. The company is okay with people using AI to help improve their writing; however, it's a problem when someone's post no longer represents their thoughts or voice.
In other words, we are not talking about the elimination of all posts that have ever made use of AI technology. We are specifically talking about generic content that doesn't add anything valuable to the discussion.
According to LinkedIn, the company's detection system was able to identify generic AI posts at a rate of 94% in June alone. AI-generated posts that do not add an original viewpoint to the content are unlikely to be seen by anyone but the author's own connections.
LinkedIn Is Also Removing Its Own AI Rewrite Tool
LinkedIn is also taking another step in the opposite direction by discontinuing an AI feature of its own. The "enhance your post" feature that could help in rewriting the post written by the user through AI technology will be discontinued. Instead of the above-mentioned AI tool, LinkedIn will launch a proofreading feature that will correct grammar and clarity without altering the tone or the message of the person.
Apart from the above, LinkedIn is also planning on extending verification for profiles and pages.
Fighting Automation at Scale
Some figures were provided by LinkedIn regarding the automated activity it is experiencing. As mentioned by Srinivasan, LinkedIn blocks hundreds of thousands of automated commenting attempts on a daily basis as well as millions of other attempts related to automation during recent months.
